Why Have I Been Referred to an Endodontist?

You have been referred to our endodontic office for root canal treatment. Endodontists are highly skilled dental specialists in diagnosing and treating tooth pain and performing root canal treatment. While it may seem easier to extract a tooth, it is always better to maintain a healthy, natural smile whenever possible, and root canals allow for just that.

When undergoing root canal treatment, the inflamed or infected pulp (what is commonly referred to as “the nerve”) is removed, and the inside of the tooth is carefully cleaned, disinfected, and filled. This may take one or more visits. Afterward, you will return to your dentist for a restoration, such as a filling or a crown. Sometime after treatment is completed, our office will contact you to schedule an appointment to check on the healing. There is no fee for this short but important follow-up visit. Occasionally, normal healing does not occur. Fortunately, there are additional treatments available to address these issues.

Why is Root Canal Treatment Needed?

It is necessary to have endodontic treatment when the inside of your tooth (the pulp) becomes inflamed or infected as a result of deep decay, repeated dental procedures, faulty crowns or cracks in the tooth. Trauma to your tooth may also damage the pulp, even if the tooth has no visible chips or cracks. If the inflamed pulp or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess. Root canal treatment preserves the root of the tooth.

During Root Canal Treatment

After each visit, the tooth and surrounding tissues may be tender for several days. Mild pain relievers such as Ibuprofen and Tylenol are usually helpful. Bathing the tooth with warm salt water is soothing. A teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water is the right combination and may be done every hour if needed. Do not apply heat to the outside of the face. It is best to avoid chewing directly on the tooth for a few days. When the tooth becomes comfortable, you may use it cautiously, until it is fully restored. Brush your teeth as usual. Should pain become severe or if swelling develops, please contact the office.
